The Game-Makers

Dubbed the ‘Game-makers’ by Organisers, volunteers at the London 2012 Olympic and soon to be Paralympic Games, were essential in helping to make the Games happen.

No less that 70,000 Volunteers took on a variety of roles across the London venues and JustPhysio were delighted to here that some of our very own locums played a key part in the Games.

We caught up with Darshika Mistry a locum Physio from London for a bit of inside info;

“I wasn't actually volunteering as a physio, as I don't have enough physio experience for that, I was a first responder for the crowd at the hockey. It really was a great experience, I'm so glad I signed up for it!

They picked the first responders so that there were a range of background skills, so I worked with lots of nurses, a few doctors and physios and just people with first aid qualifications but no medical background.

The atmosphere was fantastic, especially during the GB games, Dutch supporters were good fun too; and everyone was really friendly. One of the best points was definitely the people I worked with, we got on well as a group and made friends quickly, which helped a lot. - We were also lucky in that we got to watch a lot of the hockey while standing guard over our stands, other volunteers weren't so fortunate.

Also I quite enjoyed taking a photo with the NZ men's hockey team! But the biggest highlight was definitely getting into the Olympic stadium on the last night of the athletics, it made all the early mornings, late nights and long hours worth it.”
